Since 1955, National Review magazine (NR Inc.) has defined the modern conservative movement and enjoys the broadest allegiance of American conservatives. National Review Institute was founded by William F. Buckley Jr. as a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization in 1991. NRI’s mission is to advance the conservative principles he championed, complement the mission of the magazine, and support NR’s best talent. In 2015 NR Inc., the editorial enterprise, became a wholly-owned subsidiary of NRI.
The Institute’s educational programs bring together leaders in business, philanthropy, media, and policy to help strengthen the broader conservative movement, while also educating emerging leaders and our fellow citizens on the principles of a free society. National Review Institute, a NYC-based conservative institution, seeks a Director/Vice President of Finance and Operations to join its senior management team.In addition to educational and fellowship programs, the Institute has significant fund-raising operations, national conferences and events.
The position will be responsible for all finance and administration of the organization, including office operations and special projects. A significant portion of this job’s responsibilities will be the accounting/business operations for the subsidiary, NR Inc., which include online and print publishing and advertising.
The candidate will provide useful financial and operational insight and analysis to help make sound strategic decisions, will voice well-substantiated dissenting opinions when needed and have an intense appreciation of accountability and bottom line results.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the management of:
- Monthly financial reporting (GAAP)
- Office operations and management
- Special projects
- Tax compliance (Fed, State, local)
- Employee benefits
- Cost efficiencies
- Operational best practices
- Internal controls
- Annual audit
- Cost-sharing program with subsidiary
- Finance committee meetings
- Board meeting presentations
- Contract review
- IT contractors
- Recruitment of new hires
The position reports directly to the President, and will oversee a staff of four at NRI and NR Inc.
The ideal candidate will have earned their CPA credential and have at least 7 years of experience in public accounting, with high performance ratings and leadership skills, and legal knowledge.Non-profit, publishing and IT experience are all plusses.The candidate must have strong Excel and Word skills, excellent written and verbal communications, be highly organized and interact effectively with all levels in an organization.
