Will a BYOD Policy Really Give You a Better Workforce?

The Short Answer is Yes

The new policy of BYOD is flooding the technical workforce, but there’s controversy surrounding it. BYOD translates to “Bring Your Own Device,” allowing employees to use their personal technology for work, both in the office and outside of it. Many employees and employers claim that BYOD boosts productivity in a variety of ways, while others argue that it in fact hinders productivity by causing distraction, disorder, and an unmanageable system that poses risks to security.

In this modern tech-based society, it’s natural to doubt the benefits of new developments in contrast to old and proven techniques. Is there any truth to this new trend? Is it just a passing fad we’ll look back on with regret? Here are some of the ways workers and employers claim BYOD improves productivity, shedding light on this new technique.

1. It’s Familiar

All devices are not created equal, and even the most tech-savvy person can find it difficult to work on a device they’re unfamiliar with. Perhaps most of your employees are familiar with the Windows’ desktop, and this means the switch to Mac will result in moments of confusion and frustration which they must overcome. In the initial stages, this can create a great pause in production as your employees become familiar with the new interfaces. In the long run, this can cause smaller but significant mental transfer times where your employees must “translate” the Mac functions from the Windows they’ve used in their off-time. However, with BYOD, your employees are allowed to use their own familiar devices, eliminating this pause time and enabling them to work smoothly with programs they are experienced with. This sense of comfort will boost speed as well as creativity, benefiting your company.

2. It’s Flexible

There are new programs and apps being built every day, and it’s impossible for one person or even an entire division of management-level employers to know every trend and the benefits they bring. When forcing your employees to utilize a single style of system, you’re restricting your workforce to only what you know. By allowing them to try their own techniques, they can discover new programs and apps which might have otherwise been overlooked, simply because you didn’t know they existed. For example, perhaps one of your employees knows a small indie app which functions better than your mandatory Mac Page’s app, and they can boost their productivity by using this new system. With BYOD, you are essentially employing a group of freelance researchers, seeking out new productivity-boosting programs to benefit your company.

3. It’s Mobile

When your employees are dependent on the devices your company provides, they are restricted to working only when they have access to these devices. For example, if your business provides Mac computers for conducting work, your employees will be unable to continue their work from a coffee shop during their break, when they only have their Samsung tablet. By allowing employees to work on their own devices, they will have constant access from any location – at home, on the bus, at a coffee shop, and so on. These small additions to productivity can make a great difference, allowing your employees to focus on work for longer and with more dedication.

4. It’s Cost-effective

Providing all the devices for your workforce is a substantial financial burden, as you are having to buy the computers and the phones, and then pay for any program memberships, phone plans, and insurance costs surrounding these devices. By allowing employees to bring their own devices, they are making the initial payments and using them recreationally when not working. This means you do not have to make the purchases, saving significant amounts on your budget. This money can then be devoted to improving the office, raising the salary of your employees, and generally benefitting the business.

There are many passing trends concerning technology and how it benefits the workforce; many of which make a brief appearance before fading out. However, the benefits of BYOD are clearly illustrated by companies utilizing the policy while also considering the potential issues surrounding BYOD security. Independent devices are a wise trend to follow, seeing as they save on cost, boost productivity, and make the working experience more enjoyable for all workers.
