Snapchat and Amazon team up to offer point-and-buy option

Partnership will target the trend of incorporating smartphone cameras into commerce to streamline shopping process

Snap Inc. announced in a blog post this week that it is currently testing a product search feature to offer Snapchat users an in-app shopping solution.

The new feature will integrate a visual search function to offer Snapchat users a point-and-buy shopping feature. Users will be able to point their Snapchat camera at desired items and will then be able to complete the transaction through Amazon.

A blog post on the Snap Inc. site explains: "When the item or barcode is recognized, an Amazon card will appear on-screen, surfacing a link for that product or similar ones available on Amazon.

"Tap your selection to visit the Amazon App (if you have it installed on your phone) or Amazon.com, where you can complete your purchase or keep browsing," Snap noted.

According to a Bloomberg report the partnership is said to be a strategic move in relation to the current trend of incorporating smartphone cameras into commerce in order to streamline shopping process.

The feature is currently available to selected US Snapchat users. "We’ll be rolling it out slowly," Snap added, "but we wanted to announce it to everyone at the same time".
