Nike's new basketball shoe to feature custom-fit technology

Basketball shoe incorporating FitAdapt technology will enable players to adapt the fit to their foot during games

Footwear manufacturing giant Nike has announced it will release a shoe featuring custom-fit technology that will give basketball players the opportunity to adapt the fit of the shoe during games.

Available from February, the Nike Adapt BB features the Nike Adapt platform which creates a custom fit for the wearer through a combination of ab advanced power-lacing system, an app and continually updated firmware.

"We picked basketball as the first sport for Nike Adapt intentionally because of the demands that athletes put on their shoes," said Nike VP creative director of innovation Eric Avar. "During a normal basketball game, the athlete's foot changes and the ability to quickly change your fit by loosening your shoe to increase blood flow and then tighten again for performance is a key element that we believe will improve the athlete's experience."

According to Nike, the Nike Adapt BB will be its first continually updated performance product, thanks to the relationship between the shoe's digital app and its opt-in firmware updates.

Custom-fit technology has previously been implemented within Nike's shoe designs, with the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, a multipurpose performance shoe featuring power lacing, introduced in 2016.

The Nike Adapt BB features a custom motor and gear train which senses tension and adjusts accordingly. To adjust the shoe's settings, players can use a smartphone app which incorporates FitAdapt technology during time-outs. Players can then opt-in for FitAdapt firmware updates, with a future version expected to enable the user to prescribe a different tightness setting for warm-ups.

Following testing of the shoe, Nike's design team invited a number of professional players, including Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum, to put the shoe through an exhaustive trial.

Avar added. "The Nike Adapt BB helps the athlete find their custom fit and provides uncompromising lockdown, feel and traction throughout a game, but we knew it would only be validated once the game's best players tried it out."

Nike has said it plans to introduce FitAdapt to other sports and lifestyle products in the future.
