Facebook has announced its intention to sue South Korean data analytics firm Rankwave after it used data tied to at least 30 apps it has operated on the Facebook platform since 2010.
Facebook has alleged that Rankwave, which analyzes social media users' data for marketing purposes, created and sold advertising and marketing tools on the apps in defiance of Facebook's rules.
Facebook director of platform enforcement and litigation Jessica Romero said: "Facebook was investigating Rankwave's data practices in relation to its advertising and marketing services.
"Rankwave failed to cooperate with our efforts to verify their compliance with our policies, which we require of all developers using our platform."
Facebook filed the lawsuit with the California Superior Court in San Mateo County, in which it alleged that Rankwave had breached a contract between the two businesses and violated a California law that prohibits unfair, unlawful or fraudulent business acts.
Rankwave has denied disobeying Facebook's policies, but the social network said the company had not provided enough evidence to allay its complaints. Facebook has since suspended apps and accounts tied to Rankwave but has not yet specified what type or how much user data Rankwave has gathered.
Facebook has been attempting to prove that it has been taking privacy seriously following a wave of scandals relating to data privacy over the past year, including the last year's Cambridge Analytica scandal in which 50 million users' data was shared by the social media giant without their consent.
