Facebook appoints new head of Instagram

Adam Mosseri, who was previously head of product, takes the reigns of the photo-sharing app following the departure of its co-founders last week

Facebook has announced that Adam Mosseri, who was previously Instagram's head of product, will take over as the head of Instagram. The announcement follows the sudden resignation of co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger last week.

"We are thrilled to hand over the reins to a product leader with a strong design background and a focus on craft and simplicity, as well as a deep understanding of the importance of community," Systrom and Krieger stated in a press release.

"These are the values and principles that have been essential to us at Instagram since the day we started, and we're excited for Adam to carry them forward," they added.

Mosseri has had an extensive career with Facebook, joining the company in 2008 as a product designer before later being promoted to design director for the company's mobile apps. Mosseri then led the News Feed division before becoming Instagram's head of product in May.

On his appointment, Mosseri commented: "I'm humbled and excited about the opportunity to now lead the Instagram team."

Systrom and Krieger announced their resignations last week six years after Facebook acquired Instagram for $1bn. Their departure followed widespread reports of tension among the two founders and CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the direction of the social media conglomerate.
