Apple to release new iPhone despite flagging sales

A leaked report to investors from Barclays has revealed that Apple is working on a new range of iPhone's despite the tech giant's recent struggles with its flagship product

In the face of flagging sales, Apple is planning to release a new iPhone range, according to a report obtained by 9to5Mac in which financial giant Barclays tipped off investors to the changes.

The report followed a leak last week when Apple's face ID component supplier AMS revealed that it had created technology for a new range of phones that removes the iPhone's notch entirely, meaning the iPhone will no longer need a bezel (the plastic/metal on the front of a phone which is not screen).

"Smartphone OEMs today are striving to maximize their products' screen-to-body ratio, reducing the bezel area as much as possible on the display's face," said AMS senior marketing manager David Moon at the time of the leak. "The TCS3701 enables phone designers to take this trend to a new level, potentially eliminating the bezel entirely."

In addition to this change, the Barclays report added that the new phone, dubbed the "iPhone XI/iPhone 11", will introduce a new triple camera system, likely with a 3D sensor.

The new phone will also reportedly integrate new antenna technology. Although the report does not break down exactly what this would mean, there have been rumors of the tech giant switching from liquid crystal polymer antennas to a modified PI approach. This new antenna system would be to improve the phone's connection speeds in order to compete with the anticipated number of smartphones coming out this year with 5G connection, something Apple has decided to delay until at least 2020.

However, the next generation of iPhones may be arriving at a bad time as Apple has reportedly cut back production of its iPhones by 10% for the first three months of 2019, indicating that interest in waning in its flagship product.
